ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro price cards at about $20 a month each; memory does not carry between them

ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro: Which Is Worth Paying For in 2026?

ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro all cost about $20. Here's how their limits, context and memory compare, which one to buy, and what to do if you need two.

ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro price cards at about $20 a month each; memory does not carry between them

Quick answer: All three cost about $20 a month (as of October 13, 2026). Pick ChatGPT Plus for an all-rounder with unlimited text chat, Claude Pro for writing, long documents and coding, and Google AI Pro (Gemini Pro) if you live in Gmail and Docs or want 5 TB of storage. Memory doesn't carry between them.

Last checked: October 13, 2026, against OpenAI's, Anthropic's and Google's pricing and help pages. Prices are US, before tax.

Every week someone asks me a version of "which one should I pay for?" Usually they're already paying for one and flirting with a second. The models now trade the lead every few months, so what decides whether a subscription is worth it is less exciting: usage limits, the apps it plugs into, and how much it remembers about you.

That last one is what I work on, so I'll be specific about it. Everything else comes from the vendors' own pages, linked inline. (Google AI Pro is the plan people still search for as "Gemini Pro" or the old "Gemini Advanced".)

How much do ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro cost?

At the $20 tier they're the same price. Only Claude publishes an annual discount for individuals: $200 up front, about $17 a month. Google doesn't list an annual price on its US page.

As of October 13, 2026 (US prices).

Plan Monthly Billed yearly Cheaper tier Top tier
ChatGPT Plus $20 No individual annual plan Go, $8 Pro: $100 / $200 / $500
Claude Pro $20 $200/yr (~$17/mo) None Max, from $100 (5× or 20× Pro usage)
Google AI Pro (Gemini Pro) $19.99 Not listed on US page AI Plus, $4.99 Ultra $99.99 / $199.99

Sources: ChatGPT pricing, ChatGPT Pro tiers, Claude pricing, Google AI plans. OpenAI's FAQ is blunt about the missing discount: "We offer monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise."

So price doesn't decide this. Limits, context and memory do.

Which has higher usage limits: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Gemini Pro?

ChatGPT Plus is the hardest to run out of for ordinary chat. Claude Pro is the easiest to hit a wall on. Google AI Pro is in between.

As of October 13, 2026.

ChatGPT Plus Claude Pro Google AI Pro
Everyday text chat Unlimited, "subject to abuse guardrails" (pricing) Rolling 5-hour window + weekly cap (pricing) 4× standard limits; refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly limit (Google help)
What actually runs out Thinking models, uploads, images, voice, Codex/Work Everything, shared with Claude Code Pro model, Deep Research, generation
Published message counts No "No fixed message count" No

Anthropic's wording: "Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top." If you've seen Claude's "chat limit reached" message, this is why. Claude Code shares the same pool, so a long coding session eats your chat budget too.

ChatGPT's change is the big one this year. OpenAI's pricing page and Go help article now list unlimited everyday text chat on every plan, Free included. The limits sit on the expensive features: thinking models, uploads, images, deep research, Codex and Work.

Which has the biggest context window?

Claude and Gemini hold up to 1M tokens in one conversation. That's about four times ChatGPT Plus's Thinking window and nearly 20 times its default Instant window. A bigger window keeps a long document or chat "in view" longer before the start drops out.

As of October 13, 2026.

Plan Context window (paid) Source
ChatGPT Plus 54K tokens (Instant), 256K (Thinking) chatgpt.com/pricing
Claude Pro Up to 1M (varies by model) claude.com/pricing
Google AI Pro 1M tokens one.google.com

For scale: 54K tokens is about 40,000 words, a long chat or a short report. Google says 1M tokens is up to 1,500 pages of text. If you paste whole codebases, contracts or transcripts, Claude or Gemini will lose the thread later than ChatGPT, though even Gemini can lose context in very long chats.

Context is not memory, though. It disappears when the chat ends.

Which one remembers you best between chats?

Each has memory on paid plans, and each works differently. None of them can read another's. The side-by-side memory comparison goes deeper; here's what matters for buying.

ChatGPT Plus Claude Pro Google AI Pro
Learns from past chats Yes Yes Yes, when Memory is on
Import from another AI None documented Yes, experimental (Anthropic) Yes, "Import memory to Gemini" (Google)
Export in a form another AI can use None documented Documented (Anthropic) None documented

The short version:

  • ChatGPT is the most hands-off. It builds a picture of you from chats, files and connected apps, and OpenAI says plainly that the visible summary isn't all of it. More in how ChatGPT memory fills up.
  • Claude is the most controllable. You can open a memory, read it, and delete one item. Anthropic says its memory "is designed to focus on work-related topics," so personal details may not stick. More in how Claude memory works.
  • Gemini knows the most about you if Gmail, Calendar and Drive are connected, and the least if they aren't. More in how Gemini memory works.

Look at the import row. Claude and Gemini both have a button for bringing memories in. Getting them out is much harder. That's not an accident: the memory is the lock-in.

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each remember a different slice of you and can't read each other's memory

Which is better: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro?

Pick by where your work happens, not by benchmark headlines.

Coding tool Codex Claude Code Antigravity, Jules
Best for A bit of everything: questions, images, voice Writing, long documents, code Gmail, Docs, Sheets

If one column describes you, stop here and buy that one. If you code with an agent all day, the $20 plans will run out; look at Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro.

Which is best for coding?

Claude Pro, if your sessions are moderate: Claude Code is included and the 1M context fits large codebases, but chat and code share one pool. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex. Neither tool remembers much between sessions on its own; see Claude Code memory and does Codex remember past conversations.

Which is best for writing?

Claude Pro. It holds long drafts in context and lets you edit exactly what it remembers about your style. Pick Google AI Pro instead if your drafts live in Docs.

Is it worth paying for two AI subscriptions?

For a lot of people, yes. The most common pair I see is ChatGPT Plus plus Claude Pro, at $40/month, or $440/year if you pay for Claude annually. People keep ChatGPT for quick questions and images and Claude for writing and code.

The real cost of two subscriptions isn't the extra $20. It's what happens on day three:

  1. You explain your job, your project and your preferences to ChatGPT.
  2. You switch to Claude for a draft. It doesn't know any of it.
  3. You paste it all in again, or you don't and get a generic answer.
  4. Claude learns something new about the project. ChatGPT never hears about it.

Each tool knows a different, increasingly stale version of you. The better built-in memory gets, the more your context splits across tools, and the hidden cost of AI amnesia adds up.

I hear this one constantly: "I'd switch to Claude but ChatGPT knows me." That's the lock-in working as designed. It's also why I wrote up how to switch from ChatGPT to Claude without losing it.

How do you use two AI subscriptions without repeating yourself?

You have three options, from free to paid. (Longer roundup: best AI memory tools.)

1. A context file (free). Keep a markdown file with who you are, your current projects and your preferences. Paste it into each tool's custom instructions or project. It's yours, and it goes stale the moment you forget to update it. It also doesn't carry what you said in chats.

2. Use the import features (free, one-way). Ask ChatGPT to list what it remembers about you, then paste that into Claude's or Gemini's memory import. It's a snapshot. Anthropic calls its import experimental, and nothing flows back the other way. Steps are in how to transfer ChatGPT memory to another AI.

3. One shared memory layer (paid). This is what I build MemoryPlugin to be: one memory that works inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek and the rest of its 23 supported platforms, so whatever you teach one, the others know.

What does MemoryPlugin cost compared with a second subscription?

MemoryPlugin Core is $89 a year, about $7.40 a month. That's less than any second AI subscription, and it makes the two you already pay for act like one.

As of October 13, 2026 (US prices).

Setup Yearly cost Shared memory?
ChatGPT Plus only $240 n/a
ChatGPT Plus + Claude Pro (annual) $440 No
ChatGPT Plus + Claude Pro (annual) + MemoryPlugin Core $529 Yes
ChatGPT Plus + Claude Pro (annual) + Google AI Pro ~$680 No
  • Core ($89/yr): curated memories across all 23 platforms, Smart Memory (up to 90% fewer tokens injected), and chat history import of your last 500 conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek or TypingMind.
  • Pro ($180/yr): everything in Core, plus unlimited chat history, summaries and shared buckets you can invite your team to.

Every subscription starts with a 7-day free trial and has a 14-day refund after that. It works through the browser extension in chat apps, and over MCP in Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. It does not work in Microsoft Copilot or Meta AI.

Here's the honest test. If you only use one AI and you're happy with its memory, you don't need it. If you're paying for two and re-explaining yourself in the second one, start the trial and import your ChatGPT history on day one. The next time you open Claude, what you told ChatGPT is there to recall.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro better value in 2026?

They cost the same per month, but Claude Pro is $200/year billed annually ($17/month) and ChatGPT Plus has no individual annual plan. ChatGPT Plus gives more chat for the money (unlimited text). Claude Pro gives a bigger context window (up to 1M tokens vs 54K–256K).

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it in 2026?

Yes, if you use AI for a bit of everything. Text chat is unlimited even on Free, so you're paying for thinking models, more uploads, images, deep research and Codex.

Is Claude Pro worth it if you don't code?

Yes, if you write or work with long documents. The 1M context and editable memory are the reasons to pay; Claude Code is a bonus.

Is Google AI Pro worth it just for Gemini?

Only if you use Google Workspace or want the 5 TB of storage. For chat alone, its 1M-token context is its strongest point.

Is Google AI Pro free for students?

Google offers students a free year of Google AI Pro. Availability varies by country; check one.google.com.

Can ChatGPT and Claude share memory?

Not natively. Neither can read the other's memory. You can copy memories over by hand once, or use a shared layer like MemoryPlugin to keep them in sync. See how to sync memory across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok.

If I cancel ChatGPT Plus, do I lose my memory?

No. Memory stays on the Free plan, but Free memory is "Limited," context is smaller (27K tokens) and there are fewer features. Export your data first if you might leave for good.

Does MemoryPlugin work with Copilot?

No. Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI aren't supported. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Mistral, Poe, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and more are. See the full platform list.

Prices and limits change often. I'll update this page when any of the three vendors changes its $20 plan.
