Most people who work with AI use more than one tool. One for coding. Another for writing. Maybe a third for research.

Each of those tools now has a Memory feature, and each one works only inside its own app.

That means whatever you teach ChatGPT stays in ChatGPT. Your preferences, your projects, your constraints: every other AI starts from zero. If you switch between assistants regularly, you end up spending hours re-explaining context your AI should already know.

There is no built-in way to keep memory in sync across AI tools. Claude and Gemini both offer memory imports from other AIs, but those imports are one-time snapshots. Everything else comes down to copy and paste. For a continuous sync, you need an external memory layer that every AI can read from and write to.

Why ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Memory Does Not Sync

Every major AI assistant now ships its own Memory feature. Each one works across conversations inside its own product, and stops there.

The silo is only half the problem. Even inside a single tool, native Memory has limits:

  • Each tool learns a different part of your life: your diet lives in one app, your writing voice in another, and your deadlines in a third. No single assistant has the full picture.
  • Each platform decides what to keep: memory is filtered through the platform's own rules. One-off details often disappear, and project state rarely survives for long.
  • Memory has capacity limits: native Memory isn't unlimited. Once capacity fills up, new memories can fail to save or replace older ones.
  • Some systems rewrite memories over time: ChatGPT's 2026 memory overhaul replaced the old list of saved memories with a rolling summary. Information you intentionally saved may eventually be merged into a paraphrased version.

So syncing has to solve two problems: getting memory out of each silo, and keeping it current everywhere afterward.

What Syncing AI Memory Means: Memories vs Chat History

"Memory" refers to two different things, and they sync differently:

  • Memories are the curated facts: your preferences, constraints, background, and important decisions. They're small, structured, and high value per token.
  • Chat history is the complete record of every conversation. It's much larger, much less structured, and where all the details live that you never explicitly saved.

A complete sync handles both.

Your memories should be available in every AI from your next conversation. Your chat history should be searchable from any AI, so a decision buried in a ChatGPT conversation from last year can surface while you're working in Claude today.

Keep this distinction in mind. The official imports below each cover only part of it.

Option 1: Official Memory Imports in Claude and Gemini (One-Time)

Two platforms offer built-in imports from ChatGPT. They're worth using if you're moving between those specific tools.

The Claude import:

Anthropic added memory import and export in July 2026, and labels the feature "experimental and still in active development" in its own support docs.

  1. In Claude, go to Settings > Memory. (If you see Settings > Capabilities, you're on the legacy memory experience; the newer interface lives directly under Memory.)
  2. Start the memory import. Claude produces a prompt you paste into your source AI.
  3. Copy the prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or Grok. Any of the four works, per Anthropic and press coverage.
  4. Paste the response back into Claude.

Clean and quick. It covers memories only, not chat history.

The Gemini import:

Google shipped its cross-AI switching tool in March 2026 under the label Import memory to Gemini.

  1. In Gemini, go to Settings > Import memory to Gemini.
  2. For memories: paste the suggested prompt into ChatGPT or Claude (both source AIs are supported), then paste the summary that comes back into Gemini.
  3. For chat history: export your ChatGPT data as a ZIP file (up to 5GB) and upload it directly into Gemini.

The transfer is text only. Imported chats land in your Gemini activity, where Google can use the data to improve its services unless you delete it. 

Everything Else

Perplexity now ships a full Memory feature. It launched for consumer subscribers in late 2025, expanded to Enterprise in February 2026, and got an accuracy upgrade the same month with recall reaching 95%. 

Perplexity remembers key details across conversations, works across every model and search mode, and is managed at Settings > Personalize > Manage Memories. Deleted memories have a 30-day recovery window. What it does not offer is an import flow from another AI, so moving your existing memory in still requires copy and paste.

Grok has Personalize with Memories but no shipped official import. An "Import memory" option has appeared in previews of its Memory settings, so this may change. For now, moving memories into Grok is still a manual process.

The shared limitation is simple: every official import is a snapshot. Anything you teach an AI afterward stays behind until you repeat the entire import process. Useful for migrations, not synchronization.

Step 2: Sync your existing ChatGPT memories

You do not start from zero. Pull in what ChatGPT already knows:

  1. Open ChatGPT and go to Settings, then Personalization, then Manage Memories.
  2. Click the "Sync Memories" button with the MemoryPlugin logo.
