Quick answer: In October 2026 OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI: answers can come back as charts, forms and small tools, and start while it's still thinking. Around it shipped dots (always-on agents), Space and Pages, audio uploads, Pro 500, and a planned custom GPT retirement. People liked the interactive answers; the GPT retirement is the sore point.

What is Intelligent UI in GPT-6?
OpenAI says it "trained GPT-6 to compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements," including "graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences." If you ask how to split a bill, you might get a bill splitter back. The model decides when to do this.

For me the bigger change is that GPT-6 "can interleave thinking with answering," so you can start reading before it has finished reasoning.
There are limits. Paid plans get Sol, and Free and Go get Luna. Intelligent UI doesn't work on the Pro reasoning option, which still runs Astra.
What are ChatGPT dots?
Dots are agents that "can take on ongoing work and keep making progress between conversations." You give one a goal, connect apps, and set what it's allowed to do without asking. They're limited to eligible Pro and Business Premium users aged 18 and up, and Pro users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK are excluded at launch. For the first month, dots don't count against plan allowances.
An agent that works between conversations is only as good as the context it carries.
Are custom GPTs going away?
Yes. OpenAI plans to "retire custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans and provide a migration path to plugins." So far, only Enterprise has dates: no new GPTs after October 26, and retirement on December 11. If you depend on a GPT, save its instructions and knowledge files now. A plugin won't necessarily behave the same way.
What are people saying?
Liked: the interactive answers.
"ChatGPT just stopped being a text box 🤯" (@thetechlanehq)
Wary: of generated UI being wrong.
"Faster answers with visuals means more surface area for me to debug when the UI lies." (@first_sauce_lab)
OpenAI's only number is speed: answers start about 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on web-search questions. It gave no accuracy figure.
Upset: about custom GPTs.
"I've subscribed to ChatGPT primarily for custom GPTs for over two years. They account for approximately ninety-five percent of my conversations." (@HunterWade)
"Plugins are far from being as good as Custom GPTs, principally when it comes to simply sharing a URL with the GPT." (@AnxiousWeepy)
So is the October 2026 ChatGPT update worth it?
Yes, for everyday use. Intelligent UI changes what an answer looks like, and having answers stream while the model reasons is a real improvement. The risks are trust, because a polished chart can still be wrong, and churn. Custom GPTs, auto-switching and Library are all being replaced in a single quarter, and each change moves where your instructions live.
Each migration is also another chance for your context to get left behind. And none of it follows you to Claude or Gemini. MemoryPlugin gives you one memory that works across 23 AI platforms. Core is $89/year with a 7-day trial. Copilot and Meta AI aren't supported.
